Smoky is a 1933 American Western film directed by E. A. Martin and starring Victor Jory, Irene Manning, and Monte Blue. The movie is set in the American West during the late 1800s and follows the story of a wild horse named Smoky. The horse changes hands several times as he is captured and tamed by various horsemen. Smoky eventually finds his way to Clint Barkley (played by Victor Jory), a horse trainer who specializes in breaking wild horses. The two form a bond and become inseparable as they compete in the rodeo circuit.
Smoky was based on the novel of the same name by Will James and was one of the most successful horse films of its time. The movie was praised for its beautiful cinematography and its realistic portrayal of life on the western frontier. It was also notable for featuring several prominent rodeo performers as themselves, including Bill Pickett, a legendary African American cowboy and and inventor of bulldogging.
Despite its popularity at the time, Smoky has since faded into obscurity and is rarely shown on television or in theaters. However, it remains an important example of early Hollywood Westerns and a tribute to the rugged individualism and independence that defined the American West.
